Commandments of the Shepherd of Hermas
Commandments of the Shepherd of Hermas
Believe that there is one God who created and finished all things, out of nothing.
Be simple and guileless, and you will be as the children who do not know the wickedness that ruins the life of men. Speak no evil of no one, nor listen with pleasure to anyone who speaks evil of another.
Love the truth and let nothing but the truth proceed from your mouth.
Guard your chastity, and let no thought enter your heart of another man’s wife, or of fornication, or of similar iniquities, for by doing this is a great sin. But if you always remember your own wife, you will never sin.
Be patient and of good understanding, and you will rule over every wicked work, and you will work all righteousness. For if you are patient the Holy Spirit that dwells inside you will be pure.
Trust the righteous but put no trust in the unrighteous. For the path of righteousness is straight, but the path of the wicked is crooked.
Fear the Lord and keep His commandments. If you do this you will be powerful in every action, and every one of your actions will be incomparable, for fearing the Lord you will do all things well.
Restrain yourself in regard to evil, and do not do it, but exercise not restraint in doing good. If you restrain from doing good you commit a great sin.
Put away doubting from you and do not hesitate to ask of the Lord, saying how can I ask of him seeing as I have sinned so much against him? Do not thus reason with yourself, and turn to the Lord with all your heart and ask without doubting.
Remove from yourself grief, for she is the sister of doubt and anger. Grief is the most wicked of all spirits and most terrible to the servants of God. Remove grief from yourself, and do not crush the Holy Spirit.
Keep away from false prophets who are empty and answer according to wicked desires, for the devil fills them with his spirit in hopes he may overcome the righteous. He who inquires of them commits Idolatry, is devoid of truth and foolish. No spirit given by God requires to be asked, but speaks all things of itself, for it proceeds from above from the power of the divine spirit.
Put away from yourself all wicked desire, and clothe yourself with good and chaste desire. For clothed with this desire you will hate wicked desire, and will reign yourself in even as you wish.
Warning From The Shepherd
IF you do not keep these commandments, and neglect them, you will not be saved, nor your children, nor your house. The man with the Lord in his heart shall be lord over all these commandments. Those with only the Lord on their lips, who are far from Him, the commandments are difficult and hard.
